Sports enthusiast and brand specialist Gifty Oware-Mensah has been appointed as the marketing director for the 2023 African Para Games due to be hosted at Accra in Ghana.

Oware-Mensah is part of the 10-member Local Organization Committee (LOC) that has been established by the Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Mustapha Ussif at the headquarters of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) Secretariat in Accra, ModernGhana reported.

The 36-year-old is currently the deputy executive director of the National Service Scheme in Ghana and has responsibility for administration and finance, helping to manage an annual personnel pool of about 100,000.

Oware-Aboagye began her career as the events and marketing manager for Reflects Marketing Plus in Accra.

In 2014 she joined the Danquah Institute, a political think-tank.

Prior to her appointment as the deputy director of the National Service Scheme, Oware-Mensah was the director of research and media relations at the institute.

Oware-Mensah is vice-president of Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea and co-owner of Ghana Woman's Premier League Berry Ladies

She is currently a member of the Ghana Football Association's Management Committee for the Black Maidens, the country's under-17 women's football team.

The first African Para Games is due commence on September 3 this year and conclude on September 12, despite the postponement earlier this month of the 2023 African Games until next year to give officials more opportunity to prepare and time for Ghana's severe economy crisis to ease. 

It is due to involve 48 African countries.

The AfPC is poised to deliver the stand-alone multi-sport Para event which will also serve as a qualifier in several sports for next year's Paralympic Games in Paris. 

The historic first African Para Games will involve amputee football, Para-athletics, Para-powerlifting, goal ball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.

Countries which have confirmed their participation include hosts Ghana, Gambia, Cameroon, Senegal, Egypt, Cape Verde, Mali, Guinea, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Benin Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Eritrea, Burundi, South Africa, Comoros, Nigeria, Sao Tome, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Libya, Botswana, Gabon, Sudan, Rwanda, Liberia, Togo, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco and Central African Republic.
