The second seeded Malaysian pair was unable to fully breakdown the outstanding defence of Marthin and Carnando as the unseeded two emerged 21-18, 14-21, 21-13 victors after one hour in the men's doubles tournament.

Top seeds Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian of Indonesia managed to avoid a similar fate at the Arena Birmingham.

They held off a fierce challenge from South Korea's Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae to win 20-22, 21-12, 21-19.

In the men's singles, 21-year-old Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand claimed the scalp of Japanese crowd favourite and two-time world champion Kento Momota.

The sixth seed's exuberance helped him match his opponent's experience to pull off a 23-21, 21-15 victory.

He was eliminated in the second round last year but looks likely to go further this time around.

"I'm really happy.

"I didn't think too much about playing a top player - we had a plan, but you just have to control the performance.

"My mentality is now to attack as much as I can.

"Before, I always only defend and the opponent was always attacking.

"It made me tired.

"It's really difficult to play in big stadiums if you’re always defending."

The 2021 champion Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia showed flashes of a return to form as he dispatched Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin 21-12, 21-15.

It has been a disappointing year for Lee who has endured a bad run of results on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour.

"For me, I just want to start over again and get my confidence back in this tournament," he said.

"Hopefully I can bounce back.

"So far, so good."

PV Sindhu's poor record in the women's singles tournament in Birmingham continued as she lost 21-17, 21-11 to China's Zhang Yi Man.

Third seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei then eased past Kim Ga-eun of South Korea 21-10, 21-12.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and German Yvonne Li meeting in the first match.
