The 33-year-old Hungarian, who found solo success at London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020, met Georgian Sandro Bazadze in the final.

He produced a fantastic comeback to beat the European champion 15-14, even after finding himself trailing 14-10.

"My previous two competitions didn't work out, which annoyed me a bit and of course I was motivated by the home environment," Szilágyi said.

"Actually, I didn't face a famous opponent until the final four, but in these games you have to be focused, otherwise anything can happen and I succeeded.

"In the final four, I already enjoyed fencing and the great atmosphere.

"In the finale, the return tussle?

"Sandro clearly hit my helmet.

"The judge saw it, we both knew it, but the machine didn't signal.

"It was natural for me to give it back.

"Then after 10-14 my planned actions came in, and it never occurred to me to give up the game on my own, I never do that."

Defeated semi-finalists Gu Bong-il of South Korea and Frenchman Maxime Pianfetti made up the rest of the podium as they were awarded the bronze medals.

Gu then led his country to glory in the team event alongside Kim Jung-hwan, Kim Jun-ho, and Oh San-guk.

Another close final took place as the Koreans snatched a remarkable 45-44 win against Germany's Frederic Kindler, Matyas Szabo, Raoul Bonah, and Lorenz Kempf.

The match went into the final bout with the Germans leading 40-39 but an inspired 6-4 result for Oh over Szabo secured the win.

Hungary picked up bronze after beating the Romanian quartet of George Dragomir, Razvan Ursachi, Iulian Teodosiu, and Matei Cidu.
