Kraków-Małopolska 2023 President Marcin Nowak believes ski jumping's appearance at this year's European Games will demonstrate that it could have a future as a sport at the Summer Olympics.

Ski jumping has been an integral part of the Winter Olympics since featuring at the first-ever Games in Chamonix in 1924.

The sport is now set to be staged at a summer multi-sport event for the first time after it was named on the programme for the European Games.

While ski jumping is traditionally a winter sport, the International Ski Federation has held the Ski Jumping Summer Grand Prix since 1994.

Last year's series was held in Poland, France, Romania, Austria and Germany, with Polish star Dawid Kubacki winning the men's title and Slovenia's Urša Bogataj capturing the women's crown.

Zakopane - a regular stop on the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup - is due to play host to the men's, women's and mixed doubles competitions during the European Games.

Nowak said he was confident that the sport would prove a big hit at Kraków-Małopolska 2023.

"There are not enough places around the world with snow," Nowak told insidethegames.

"The climate is changing so probably the European Games will show the world in which direction ski jumping will go in the future.

"Everything is changing and every year it is much more difficult to find a place where we can organise ski jumping and skiing competitions in natural environments.

"I believe that it will be this kind of move where we could even go [from] the Winter Olympic Games to organise the ski jumping in the summer edition.

"Ski jumping is one of the greatest sports for Poland.

"We have a great team and a great tradition so we expect crowded stands around the ski jumping events.

"We invite all of you to one to the greatest ski jumping competitions in history."

The Średnia Krokiew hill is due to be used for women's, men's and mixed doubles competition from June 27 to 29, and Wielka Krokiew for women's and men's events on June 30 and July 1.

Nowak insisted that reusing venues like Zakopane was playing a key role in ensure the staging of the European Games stays within its PLN400 million (£73 million/$100 million/€88 million) budget.

"It's not easy because of inflation and the pandemic as the prices are going up like crazy," said Nowak.

"When comparing our budget to smaller competitions like the European Championships in Munich last year, it is almost the same.

"In Germany, there were just 11 sports whereas here we have 29.

"A big thing for us from the very beginning was making sure that we did not build any unnecessary venues and we did it.

"It's a sign for the sports world that if you want to be the host of the European Games or the Olympic Games you don't need to build it.

"You just need to prepare your facilities and bring the action."
