The track at Altenberg was constructed under the order of then-Stasi Minister Erich Mielke, with work completed in 1986.

Refurbishment of the track for the 2012 World Luge Championships cost 1.4 million, which included modernizing the electronics and refrigeration system and renovation of the women's and junior start houses.

Host nation Germany will again be expected to dominate the event.

At this year's Championships in Oberhof, they won a total of 16 medals, including eight of the nine gold medals.
