Karate's hope of returning to the Olympic programme was among the topics discussed when World Karate Federation (WKF) President Antonio Espinós hosted Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) counterpart Mustapha Berraf in Madrid.

Berraf, who has held his ANOCA role since 2018, a year before he became an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, also spoke about the development of karate in Africa when he visited the WKF headquarters.

Following the visit, the WKF President said: "I was pleased to welcome Mr Mustapha Berraf to the WKF headquarters and review the situation of sports and karate in Africa and around the world with him.

"Karate can bring great added value to the Olympic Movement, and we at the WKF are delighted to cooperate with Mr Berraf and ANOCA to elevate the impact of sports and the sports ecosystem in society, both on the African continent and all over the world.

"We are thrilled to have Mr Berraf as a friend of karate and we hope to have many more opportunities to share our strong passion and vision for sports in years to come."

Karate made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 when Japanese organisers selected it as an additional sport.

It has not made the programme for Paris 2024, however, and now hopes to be reinstated for Los Angeles 2018.

The sport is one of nine invited by LA 2028 to present their case for inclusion at the Olympics, along with baseball/softball, lacrosse, breaking, kickboxing, squash, motorsport, cricket and flag football.

A decision on what sports have been successful is due at the IOC Session in Mumbai between October 15 and 17.
