Japan topped the medal standings with four golds in Richmond ©WKF

Japan claimed four gold medals to top the standings at the World Karate Federation Karate 1-Series A event in Richmond.

Ayumi Yatoji, Yuzuki Sawae, Hiromu Hashimoto and Nakaji Hisami all delivered gold for Japan at the Richmond Oval in the Canadian city.

The first of those titles was won by Yatoji who stunned Skylar Lingl of the United States 2-0 in the women’s kumite under-68 kilogram final.

There was also delight for Japan in the women’s kumite over-68kg category where Sawae defeated Skylar’s sister Cirrus Lingl 4-0 in the final.

Japan's third gold medal was claimed by Hiromu who swept aside compatriot Sena Kondo 6-0 in the men’s kumite under-60kg gold-medal bout.

There was a big shock in the women’s kata where Hisami downed her team-mate Mirisa Ohuchi who was favourite to come out on top.

Hisami, who triumphed by 42.4 to 42.3, headed a Japanese one-two-three with Nodoka Yamada and Emiri Iwamoto bagging the bronze medals.

Rey Chinen of the US also pulled off a shock victory in the men’s kata final, beating Brazil’s Dyun Kimura by 43.7 to 41.1.

Hosts Canada finished the tournament with one gold to their name courtesy of Hana Furumoto-Deshaies’ victory in the women’s kumite under-55kg division.

The Canadian star delighted the home crowd when she overcame Gulmira Ussenova of Kazakhstan 3-0 in the final.

Algeria landed titles after Oussama Zaid became men’s kumite under-75kg champion with a 2-0 win over Japan’s Yusei Sakiyama and Falleh Midoune defeated Janne Haubold of Germany 5-4 to win men’s kumite under-84kg gold.

Croatia’s Ema Sgardelli emerged victorious from the women’s kumite under-50kg category, edging Italy’s Asia Agus 1-0 in the final.

Morteza Nemati of Iran saw off Mexico’s Bernardo Solorzano 3-0 to claim the men’s kumite under-67kg crown, while Greece’s Athanasios Nikopoulos overcame another Mexican opponent in Pablo Andres Benavides Palomino 5-4 to seal the men’s over-84kg title.

Hong Kong and Kuwait captured the women’s and men’s team kata titles to complete the list of gold medallists in Richmond.
