In the men's singles competition, Wang Chuqin earned the title in Macau for the second year running, with an impressive 12-10, 11-1, 11-8, 11-7 win against his compatriot and the back-to-back singles Olympic champion Ma Long.

Wang began with a comfortable 11-5, 15-13, 11-4 win against Andrej Gaćina of Croatia, before coming from behind to defeat Sweden's Mattias Falck 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5 at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion.

He survived a scare to beat South Korea's Jang Woo-jin in the quarter-finals 9-11, 11-3, 13-15, 11-8, 11-7, but then cruised past Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto 11-9, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4 before his superb victory in the final.

"I was very happy to win against Ma Long, but I still had some problems during the match," Wang said.

"I had a slow start and I need to analyse this problem later.

"This Champions event also gives me a lot of confidence, but I still need to train well and prepare for the World Table Tennis Championships in Durban."

On the women's singles side, Olympic team gold medallist Wang Manyu won her second WTT Champions event with an entertaining victory against Tokyo 2020 champion Chen Meng in the final, triumphing 11-13, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8.

She started with an 11-7, 11-8, 11-5 win against Austrian European champion Sofia Polcanova, then a 12-10, 11-6, 16-14 victory against Australia's Yangzi Liu.

Wang came from behind to win an all-Chinese quarter-final 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 against Qian Tianyi, and did the same in the semi-finals against compatriot Wang Yidi 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 11-4.

"I am very happy to win this title," she said.

"I played well today.

"In fact, every time I have played with Chen Meng it has been very close, maybe the one who played better wins, but I still handled the key shots a little better today.

"I think the most valuable thing is the confidence that this gives me.

"Next, I would like to sum up the process of this competition, devote myself to the training, and prepare well for the World Table Tennis Championship."

WTT Champions tournaments are aimed at the world's top players, with 30 qualifying by world ranking, one by wildcard and one by nomination from WTT.

The International Table Tennis Federation World Table Tennis Championships are due to be held next month from May 20 to 28 in the South African city of Durban.
