Papua New Guinea's Government has approved K12.1 million (£2.7 million/$3.4 million/€3.1 million) for the country's preparations for this year's Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

The funding for the event, due to take place between November 19 until December 2, was confirmed to the Papua New Guinea National Olympic Committee by Sports Minister Don Polye.

"The Cabinet of Prime Minister James Marape yesterday has approved K12.1 million in support for the preparations of the Games in Honiara and also to prepare for the Olympics," he said, as reported by Post Courier.

The investment was announced following a Games qualification event for boxers in the country.

Papua New Guinea topped the standings in boxing at its home Pacific Games in 2015 with eight gold medals, but slipped to second in the most recent edition in 2019 in Apia.

Host nation Samoa won seven titles to Papua New Guinea's two, with the latter also claiming six silvers.

The country is now looking to return to the summit in the Solomon Islands.

"I see a lot of talent and skills in the young people," Polye said.

"You come from Manus Kainantu Eastern Highlands, Mount Hagen, Central Province, National Capital District and everywhere in Papua New Guinea.

"I'm very proud of you young people because you are taking up the right sports.

"I have confidence in you.

"The second achievement, you're building your pathways to the Olympic Games and I'd like to applaud the PNG Olympic Committee for facilitating and creating the pathway up to the Olympic level.

"I noted the other body contact in PNG don't have such a pathway up to the top international level but boxing does.

"I will see what I can do to support you.

"In the past, I see that the resourcing of the sports federation has been a challenge, I also know from the advisory to me by the President as well that you need support.

"I've been put in place as the Minister of Sports and I know I'm going to support you in boxing."
