The Global Esports Tour is set to head to Rio de Janeiro for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons following a deal between the Global Esports Federation (GEF), the state's Government, and the Brazilian Confederation of Games and Esports.

The GEF is aiming to further esports' development in South America prior to the inaugural Panam Esports Championships which are due to be staged in parallel with the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

"We are thrilled to confirm Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a host city for the Global Esports Tour for the next three years," said GEF President Chris Chan.

"Brazil is a key growth area for esports, and we believe that this event will not only showcase the talent of professional esports athletes but also provide an opportunity to continue to fuel the growth in this powerhouse region."

The deal is expected to benefit multiple aspects of the Fluminense society.

The Global Esports Tour comprises a series of competitions staged across cities around the world throughout the year.

Each tournament showcases a unique esports title with Rio de Janeiro's to be decided upon in the near future.

"In addition to increasing the state's economy, esports is also a way of transforming lives," said special advisor for events for the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro Rodrigo Castro. 

"It's a privilege to bring to Rio de Janeiro an international sporting event that also promotes music, arts, and culture.

"We are a proud host of this important global event for our youth and gaming community, and we are committed to the development of esports."

Brazilian Confederation of Games and Esports President Paulo Roberto Ribas has described the collaboration as a prime opportunity to promote the country's best athletes and esports as a whole.

Global Esports Tour events have also been held in the United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, China, Britain, and Singapore.
