More than 3,000 athletes from a record 61 countries are set to compete at this year’s World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza.

Duathlon sprint, duathlon mixed relay, Para duathlon, aquathlon, cross duathlon, cross triathlon, long distance triathlon and aquabike races are set to be held across the 10-day event, scheduled to take place until May 7.

The Duathlon World Championships is due to be held tomorrow and Saturday (April 30) around the Santa Eulalia habour.

France have sent a strong team, including Krilan le Bihan, who will be seeking to make it back-to-back men’s sprint titles.

Spain’s Mario Mola, a three-time world triathlon gold-medallist, is also set to compete in his first Duathlon World Championships since claiming silver in the junior race in 2009 in North Carolina.

Italy’s Giorgia Priarone and Japan’s Ai Ueda are among the contenders for the women’s sprint title, while defending champions Belgium headline the duathlon mixed relay field.

Kevin Tarek Viñuela Gonzalez of Spain and Richard Varga of Slovakia are expected to battle it out for top spot at the Aquathon World Championships, due to be staged on Monday (May 1), with Zsanett Bragmayer of Hungary back for the first time since claiming women’s silver in Penticton in Canada four years ago.

The event is due to be held at San Antonio on Wednesday (May 3) when Belgium’s Thibaut de Smet will hope to retain the title over the run-mountain bike-run format.

France’s Arthur Serries will be gunning for a third successive gold at the Cross Triathlon World Championship, scheduled to take place on Friday (May 5).

He is expected to face a strong challenge from Eric Lagerstrom of the United States and brothers Felix and Arthur Forissier of France.

Italy’s Sandra Mairhofer of Italy will be the one to beat in the women’s race as she targets back-to-back wins.

Action in Ibiza is due to be wrapped up on May 7 with long distance triathlon and aquabike races.

The field is expected to include Britain’s Joe Skipper, Austria’s Joshua Amberger and Belgium’s Alexandra Tondeur.
