The AGM was held in Perurena's home nation, and he was returned on a 93 per cent majority of the vote.

The former sprint canoeist has been IWGA President since 2014, and his third term is for a reduced three years until 2026 because the last mandate was extended by 12 months to account for the COVID-19-enforced delay to the Birmingham 2022 World Games.

He outlined his hopes for his third term after his re-election.

"Since the Games in Wroclaw 2017, the IWGA has been undergoing a transition period," Perurena said.

"Together with our Executive Committee, our staff and the support of our 39 member federations, we will finish this process with the Games in Chengdu in 2025.

"My goal has been, is and will be to establish the best possible environment for all of IWGA's integrated sports."

There was a vacancy for the role of IWGA vice-president with Britain's Max Bishop stepping down after 17 years in office.

World Archery secretary general Tom Dielen of Switzerland replaces Bishop, after International Fistball Association President Jörn Verleger of Germany withdrew his candidacy.

World Underwater Federation President Anna Arzhanova of Russia, World Flying Disc Federation secretary general Volker Bernardi of Germany and International Korfball Federation President Jan Fransoo of The Netherlands were all re-elected as Executive Committee members.

Arzhanova was able to stand because a ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Birmingham 2022 World Games did not extend to elected representatives holding roles with the IWGA.

Antonio Espinós of Spain opted not to seek a fresh term on the Executive Committee to focus on his role as World Karate Federation President.

International Floorball Federation (IFF) secretary general John Liljelund of Finland was elected as his replacement.

Liljelund is the current chair of the IWGA Marketing Committee, and hopes to use his experience from his time at the IFF on the Executive Committee.

"I believe that there is quite some learnings to be taken from how we have built the floorball events," he said in the build-up to the AGM.

"I also think that I can help the IWGA in the fields of marketing, TV/streaming and questions related to how to deal with social media.

"I also hope to bring some new thinking and new knowledge to the experienced IWGA Board."

He claimed that the dissolution of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) last year gives the World Games greater significance.

"With the changes within the international sports community, after the decision to dissolve GAISF, makes the World Games especially important for the recognised International Federations," Liljelund said.

"This is the only real showcase for us to promote our sport to the broader International community."

Liljelund staved off competition from International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation President José Antonio Pérez Priego of Mexico, World Squash Federation vice-president Pablo Felipe Serna Cardenas of Colombia and Ju-Jitsu International Federation director general Joachim Thumfart of Germany to secure a position on the Executive Committee.
