The Kazakhstan capital of Astana is set to stage the Asian and Oceanian Sambo Championships from June 7 to 11 this year.

The city's Beeline Arena has been confirmed as the host venue and will see men's and women's competitions take place in youth, junior, senior, and masters age categories as well as combat sambo for men.

The Championships will also feature medal contests for blind and visually impaired athletes for the first time.

Gold medallists are due to win places at the 2023 World Combat Games in Riyadh.

"I can say with full confidence that all the participants of the Championship will be comfortable at the Beeline Arena," said International Sambo Federation (FIAS) Commission for Athletes with Disabilities chairman Roman Novikov after a visit to the venue.

He also visited the Paralympic Training Center in Astana with the sports director of the National Paralympic Committee of Kazakhstan Olzhas Akpanbetov.

"This center is a real home for Paralympic athletes, I hope that soon it will also become a home for blind and visually impaired sambists, since this center has all the conditions for sambo training," he said.

Astana was chosen by FIAS with the aim of developing and popularising sambo in Kazakhstan.

The Organising Committee is also seeking to promote healthy lifestyles with the event.

Novikov's final visit was to the Association of Martial Arts of Kazakhstan where he met with the organisation's vice-president and general director Abay Bekzhanuly.

"I was impressed by the scale of the work of the Association of Martial Arts of Kazakhstan, especially the work with disabled people of various categories - some types of martial arts have been successfully adapted by Kazakhstani specialists and are dynamically developing," said Novikov.

"In turn, I shared my experience of promoting not only sambo among the blind and visually impaired, but also spoke about such areas as sambo among the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as adaptive sambo, which are supervised by FIAS."
