A sculpture of Moongcho - the official mascot for Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympics - has been installed to welcome travellers at Incheon International Airport in South Korea.

Moongcho has been situated next to a countdown clock to the Games which are due to open in Gangwon in fewer than 250 days.

The Gangwon 2024 Organising Committee staged a ceremony to unveil the sculpture and promotional stand for the Games.

Located in terminal one, Moongcho is set to be available for visitors to get a picture with at the airport through to the end of the Games.

Moongcho represents a snowball and is born from a fight between Pyeongchang 2018 mascots Soohorang and Bandabi.

"I am delighted that the first unveiling ceremony of the 2024 Gangwon Youth Winter Olympic Games was held at Incheon International Airport, the gateway to the world," said Yoon Seon-hee, head of terminal operation department at Incheon International Airport Corporation, in a report by Korea Posts English.

"We will cooperate for the successful hosting of the 2024 Gangwon Youth Winter Olympic Games by supporting the immigration of athletes, officials, and spectators from around the world visiting Korea, providing comfortable services, and checking related facilities.

"Congratulations on the first unveiling event of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, which is about 250 days away."

Yoon attended the ceremony along with Gangwon 2024 co-Presidents Jin Jong-oh and Lee Sang-hwa.

"We are doing our best to prepare for the event so that it can attract the interest and participation of the people and become a good memory for both spectators and participating players around the world," said Jin.

"During the remaining period, we plan to carry out promotional activities for the event boom, such as events by occasion and torch relay, and we ask for your support and participation from the public for the successful hosting of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games."

Lee added: "Through this unveiling event, it seems that the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games has come one step closer.

"Since it is scheduled, I hope that not only youths from all over the world participating in the competition, but also all citizens can join and enjoy the 2024 Gangwon Youth Winter Olympic Games."

Gangwon is due to play host to the Winter Youth Olympics from January 19 to February 1.

Around 1,900 athletes, representing 81 National Olympic Committees, are expected to take part in the event.
