Former world champion Magnus Carlsen won the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour season in Warsaw.

The Norwegian triumphed at the Poland Rapid and Blitz 2023 after getting the better of home player Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the final round.

Carlsen ended the event with 24 points to pocket the prize money of $40,000 (£32,000/€37,000).

Duda finished second on 23 points as France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and American Wesley So shared third on 21.5.

The Pole needed to beat Carlsen in his final game in order to force a tiebreaker, but the Norwegian battled to a draw to win by a single point.

In the overall standings, So leads after two events with 15.3 points.

Carlsen, on 13, did not enter the first tournament in Bucharest.

The 32-year-old was world chess champion between 2013 and this year, when he opted to stop defending his title.

He has won the Grand Chess Tour circuit twice, in 2015 and 2017.

The tour features five tournaments - two classicals and three rapid and blitz.

The next event - another rapid and blitz - is scheduled to take place in Zagreb between July 3 and 10.

China's Ding Liren has replaced Carlsen as world chess champion.
