The international judo family is mourning the death of Gérard Bertrand ©IJFThe international judo family is mourning the death of Gérard Bertrand, President of the Monaco Judo Federation.

Marius Vizer, the President of the International Judo Federation, announced the passing of Bertrand in a letter on the world governing body's website, sending his condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire Monaco Judo Federation.

"I beg you to accept all my support and friendship through those difficult moments," he said.

"The absence of Mr Bertrand from the world of sports will be strongly felt, especially for those who had the honour and pleasure to know him and to collaborate with him."

Under his leadership, Monaco has enjoyed improvement on the international stage, with Yann Siccardi competing at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games, in addition to winning a gold medal at the 2011 Games of the Small States of Europe.

No details were given on the cause of death.
