Scotland defeated previously unbeaten Canada to secure their place in the semi-finals of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship at the Löfbergs Lila Arena in Karlstad in Sweden.

Having earlier beaten defending champions Hungary 6-5 in the last-16, Scotland secured a win over the Canadians by the same scoreline with a take-out in the eighth end.

"We just need to build on what we have done and keep the momentum going because we are playing well and making our shots," said Scotland’s Gina Aitken.

Victory sets up a semi-final tomorrow against China, who followed up a convincing 12-1 win against Denmark by beating Estonia 8-5 in the quarter-finals.

The other last-four encounter pits the United States against Russia after they overcame England and Finland respectively.

Fresh from their 7-2 win against Austria in the last-16, the US proved too strong for England as they triumphed 12-6.

Russia thrashed Slovakia 10-2 to reach the quarter-finals and, although they were made to work a lot harder by their next opponents Finland, they ultimately prevailed 8-7 after an extra end.

Today’s results mean that an entirely different set of teams will be on the podium from those that won medals at the 2015 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Sochi.

As this year's event is the first at which Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic qualification points are available, knock-out stage losers continue to play to determine final rankings and points allocation among the top 12 teams.

Ireland beat Hungary 10-8 to ensure they will compete in the classification for places ninth to 12th.

There they will face Slovakia, 8-5 winners against South Korea, while Norway meet Austria in the other fixture after beating New Zealand, 8-3, and Denmark, 6-3, respectively.

The losing semi-finalists will compete in the classification for places fifth to eighth with Canada facing Finland and Estonia going up against England.

The medal games are due to follow tomorrow’s semi-finals.
