Powerlifter Sakina Khatun has been awarded a conditional slot on the Indian women's team for Gold Coast 2018 after saying she would consider suicide if her appeal for a place at the Commonwealth Games was rejected.

Khatun was initially denied a place in Australia after the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) failed to submit her paperwork to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on time - something the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said had "caused a lot of distress for the athlete and also embarrassment for the IOA".

This omission by the PCI, which was put down to a clerical error, led to 28-year-old Khatun writing a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting his intervention whilst she also issued a suicide threat.

"If my name is not included, then I will move to court because they have spoiled my life," she reportedly told News Agency ANI.

"I will not leave it, even If I have to commit suicide in front of the Indian Olympic Association."

She has now, however, been granted a conditional place at Gold Coast 2018.

In a letter to IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta, PCI chief executive Shahrukh Shamshad thanked the CGF and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for awarding Khatun a spot at the Games.

"The PCI is thankful to the CGF and IPC for awarding a conditional slot to Sakina Khatun in the women's lightweight Para-powerlifting event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games," the letter read.

"The PCI confirms and accepts that it will get the necessary medical done of Sakina Khatun by a recognised medical professional and shall submit the necessary documents to the IOA by February 28.

"It appears that the name of Sakina Khatun had been inadvertently missed out in the list of names of powerlifters forwarded to the IOA by PCI.

"The PCI is also thankful to IOA for ensuring the entry of Saltine Khatun to Gold Coast 2018."

Khatun, who was diagnosed with polio at the age of one, became India's only Para-athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal when she clinched bronze at Glasgow 2014.
