altOctober 7 - Sebastian Coe, the chairman of London 2012, today said he was “thrilled” by the public’s response to his call for volunteers for the Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Coe said more than 100,000 people had already applied to be a London 2012 Games Maker.

At the halfway point in the six-week application window, thousands have already signed up.

Applications have been received from right across the UK and from all communities, including thousands from disabled people.

Research into applications has revealed that 52 per cent said London 2012 had inspired them to volunteer for the first time.

Applications will be open until midnight on October 27, so there are three weeks left to apply.

London 2012 is looking for up to 70,000 passionate and dedicated volunteers.

They will make the difference between a good and a great Games for thousands of athletes, media and spectators alike, Coe claimed.

He said: "We are thrilled with the response so far from people and would like to thank everyone who has already filled in their application form and pledged to lend their time to the greatest show on earth.

"The London 2012 Games simply could not happen without volunteers.

"Whenever I have spoken to previous volunteers, they’ve all said what a fantastic experience it was.

"So don’t miss out on this opportunity of a lifetime. You’ve got three weeks left to fill-in your application form – don’t miss the deadline of October 27."
