Belgium’s Sanne Cant has won the women’s elite world title at the International Cycling Union Cyclo-Cross World Championships for the third year in a row.

Despite her successful history at the event, the 28-year-old arrived in Bogense in Demark with many expecting her to be pushed all the way by The Netherlands’ Marianne Vos, who recently won the World Cup title with a race to spare.

A tight showdown did not materialise however, as six-time world champion Vos ended up third, 15 seconds behind.

Cant took the win in 47min 53sec, finishing ahead of a pack of four Dutchwomen which also included the European champion Anne-Marie Worst.

The silver medal though, was taken by Lucinda Brand, who finished third in last year's World Championships last year.

"The first one [world title] was unexpected," Cant said.

"This one I really can’t believe it.

"Last year I was so happy.

"This is just amazing.

"I’m a Belgian rider in front of three Dutch riders.

"The [Dutch] press didn’t make it easy for me but I answered with my legs."

Tomorrow the men’s elite race is due to go ahead, with the Dutch tipped to win gold through Mathieu van der Poel.

The 24-year-old has won every World Cup race in which he has taken part this season and so enters the World Championships in imperious form.
