The national governing body announced the event in an effort to fill the void caused by the postponement of the National Championships, which had been due to take place in Manchester.

The Manchester event would have served as the Olympic qualifying skateboard event for British athletes, prior to the announcement of the postponement of Tokyo 2020.

The coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of the National Championships at the Graystone Action Sports Academy.

“During the current circumstances we want to celebrate the amazing skateboard talent we have here in the UK and give them an opportunity to compete, as well as helping us to deliver key messages about staying at home and being active during this difficult time,” James Hope-Gill, chief executive of Skateboard England and Skateboard GB, said.

“Although the skateboarders won’t actually receive Olympic qualifying points in the competition, there will be a bit of prize money, it will inspire others to stay active at home and will be a bit of fun.”

The virtual competition will see 80 entrants invited to self-film a trick from their home and submit it online.

Unlike the standard judging format, the winner will be crowned after receiving the highest number of votes from the skateboarding public.

Entrants have been told to self-film the trick, which must not be filmed in a skatepark.

The trick should instead be filmed in either a home or garden.

The public will vote through social media channels using the hashtag "#virtualnationalchamps".

Competition begins tomorrow and will conclude on Sunday (March 29).

The winners will be announced on Sunday on the Skateboard England social media channels.
