The Dominican Republic Olympic Committee (COD) and the country’s Government are set to sign an agreement which will see athletes receive scholarships to help with training.

Antonio Acosta, the newly-appointed President of the COD, and Franklin García Fermín, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Higher Education, announced the move at a recent meeting.

The agreement is expected to be formalised at the COD headquarters with National Federations present, although a date has yet to be confirmed.

"We are going to grant scholarships and the possibility that athletes, technicians and coaches can receive training at the highest level," said Fermín.

Acosta believes the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MIDEREC) can play a key role in supporting athletes.

"The Dominican Olympic Committee, together with MESCYT and MIDEREC, will bring the opportunity to our highly competitive athletes to receive better preparation," said Acosta.

"The better the athletes prepare, we will have better citizens and a better country."

Acosta stepped into the role of COD President following the resignation of Luis Mejía Oviedo last month.

Oviedo, who has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2017, decided to step down just two years after being re-elected on a four-year term.

Acosta was appointed at a ceremony on January 29 with his position set to be ratified at a COD General Assembly in March.

His term in office is expected to last until 2024.

Luis Chanlatte has moved up from second to first vice-president - a role previously held by Acosta.

Oviedo will continue to oversee preparations for the Dominican Republic's participation at Tokyo 2020 as Chef de Mission.

The Dominican Republic has won medals at each of the last four Summer Olympic Games.

Luisito Pié won a bronze medal in the men's under-58 kilograms taekwondo at Rio 2016.
