Cyclist Maja Włoszczowska and swimmer Paweł Korzeniowski will share Poland’s flagbearer duties at the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games here.

The Polish Olympic Committee (POC) confirmed the appointment of the two flagbearers, with the organisation welcoming the International Olympic Committee (IOC) introducing a new rule encouraging each country to pick one male and one female flagbearer.

Włoszczowska is scheduled to compete at her fourth Olympics at Tokyo 2020, with the 37-year-old debuting at the Games back at Athens 2004.

Włoszczowska won a silver medal in the women’s mountain bike event at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games behind Germany’s Sabine Spitz.

She was ruled out of competing at London 2012 due to injury but made her third Olympic appearance at Rio 2016 where she secured a second silver medal behind Sweden’s Jenny Rissveds.

Włoszczowska has won world titles in both the women’s elite event and the marathon mountain bike discipline, as well as being a multiple medallist at the European Championships.

Korzeniowski is competing at his fifth Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020.

The swimmer's first Olympics was also Athens 2004.

He narrowly missed out on a medal in Athens, finishing fourth in the men’s 200 metres butterfly event.

The race saw Michael Phelps earn the second of his 23 Olympic gold medals in his career as Japan’s Takashi Yamamoto and Britain’s Steve Parry completed the podium places.

Korzeniowski was crowned world champion in the event the following year in Montreal.

The 37-year-old has won multiple medals across World and European Championships, as well as three gold medals at the Summer Universiade during his career.

Korzeniowski will compete in the men’s 100m butterfly at Tokyo 2020 as one of 17 swimmers in the Polish team.

The POC confirmed this week the swimming team had been reduced from 23 after a misunderstanding saw the Polish Swimming Federation (PSF) include swimmers who had failed to achieve qualifying times.

Aleksandra Polańska, Dominika Kossakowska, Alicja Tchórz, Bartosz Piszczorowicz, Jan Hołub, Mateusz Chowaniec travelled to Tokyo but will no longer participate.

“There have been intense discussions over the last days and hours to solve this problem for the benefit of the players and the entire Olympic Team,” said Marcin Nowak, Poland’s Chef de Mission.

“We did everything in our power to find the optimal solution.

"I was a competitor myself, I competed in the Olympics and I am aware of what our swimmers feel in this situation.

“The rules of the International Swimming Federation, however, are inexorable.

“Only those who have met the minimum limits set by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) can compete in the Olympic Games.

“The Organising Committee of the Tokyo 2020 Games and the FINA did not agree to any changes to the start lists due to the Association's misinterpretation of the qualifying rules.

Nowak added: “After intensive negotiations and the intervention of the Polish Olympic Committee, however, it was agreed to make such corrections in the team to complete the lineups of the relay teams, the start of which was also in danger.

“The negotiations conducted by the POC were consulted on an ongoing basis with the Polish Swimming Federation.

“As a result, our representatives will take part in both individual and relay competitions - but six of them, unfortunately, cannot take part in the Olympics.”
