This week's International Ski Federation (FIS) Freeski and Snowboard World Cup event at the Steamboat Ski Resort in the United States has been given the go-ahead, despite concerns over a lack of snow.

Men’s and women’s big air contests are scheduled to take place at the Colorado venue from Thursday to Saturday (December 2 to 4).

The FIS conceded "some above-average temperatures" had "hindered snowmaking efforts" in recent weeks, raising question marks over the staging of the event.

But the worldwide governing body confirmed the leg had been given the green light following a positive snow control assessment due to a "change in weather over the weekend and a favourable forecast through the week".

Teams are expected to arrive in Steamboat, with the first official day of training set for tomorrow for both the freeskiers and snowboarders.

Snowboard qualifications are scheduled for Thursday before attention turns to the freeskiers on Friday (December 3).

Both freeski and snowboard finals are due to be held on Saturday.

Steamboat will be the second and final big air competition of the 2021-2022 calendar for both the FIS Freeski and Snowboard World Cups.

The previous big air leg was staged in Chur in Switzerland last month with Austria’s Matěj Švancer and France’s Tess Ledeux winning the respective men’s and women’s freeski titles.

There was also joy for home favourite Jonas Boesiger and Japan’s Kokomo Murase in the snowboard competitions.

Steamboat is a new addition to the FIS Freeski and Snowboard World Cup calendar, maintaining the US Ski and Snowboard’s tradition of staging one of the season’s marquee big air events.

Colorado is also set to host the first FIS Halfpine World Cup event at the at Copper Mountain Resort from December 8 to 11.
