Mayor of Lake Placid Art Devlin is set to travel to Turin in Italy for a makeshift Closing Ceremony for this year's cancelled International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter Universiade which will feature a flag handover with Devlin and the Mayor of Lucerne.

The 2021 edition was scheduled to take place in the Swiss city but was abandoned due to travel restrictions imposed by the country's Government to prevent the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

The ceremony is set to happen on January 17 with Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games chief operating officer Ashley Walden saying it will take place on a small stage in the courtyard of the University of Torino, as reported by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.

FISU confirmed to insidethegames that a ceremony is scheduled to take place in Turin, with the passing of the flag from Lucerne to Lake Placid, as well as the lighting of the Chengdu Flame and beginning of the Torch Relay for the 2021 FISU World University Games also due to take place.

A series of videos that had been prepared for Lucerne are expected to be adapted for the new setting and played.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports there is friction between the Organising Committee and Devlin over who will cover the cost of the Mayor's journey.

Walden claims the organisation would not pay as former Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall used to pay for all of his trips personally, while Devlin says that he believes the Organising Committee should foot the bill for him.

Lake Placid 2023 is set to take place from January 12 to 22 next year with 12 sports set to feature.

The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games are scheduled to take place from June 26 to July 7 2022, after being postponed from 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
