Great Britain won the Country Challenge trophy as overall winners of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championship Cross Country at Aveiro in Portugal.

In rainy and windy conditions, FISU reports, Isobel Fry and Saskia Millard won gold and silver for Britain in the women’s 10 kilometres race in 31min 52sec and 32:01 respectively, with bronze going to Turkey’s Yayla Gunen in 32:14.

The men’s 10km race was won by Uganda’s Dismus Yeko in 28.00min, with Germany’s Dirk Markus Georger, who led for much of the race, finishing second in 28:07 and Uganda’s Brian Wangwe third, 12sec behind the winner.

"I was expecting sun here but the conditions were similar to those at home," Fry said.

"It was my first time in a World Championship so the gold medal will for sure remain a great memory."

Benoît Campion played a huge part in France winning the mixed relay race in company with Alexa Lemitre, Bérénice Fulchiron and Quentin Malriq.

Britain finished second and Spain third.

The 2022 FISU World University Championship Cross Country was the 22nd edition since the event was first held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1978.

The Championship has since been held in 21 cities and 14 countries in total.
