Chris_HoyDecember 3 - Sir Chris Hoy laid down an emphatic marker for the London 2012 Olympics today as he claimed victory in the men's keirin to pick up his second gold on the cycling track at the World Cup in Melbourne.

The event, which offers vital qualification points for the 2012 Olympics, features a number of the world's top cyclists, although very few seem a match for the four-time Olympic gold medallist from Scotland.

Sir Chris claimed victory with relative ease to push Teun Mulder of the Netherlands into silver and Mickael Bourgain of France into bronze.

The victory follows Sir Chris' win in the team sprint, where alongside Jason Kenny and Matt Crampton, the 34 year-old claimed his first gold in Australia.

Sir Chris, who by his own lofty standards has had a modest year after he was surprisingly beaten in the first knockout round of the men's sprint at last month's European Championships, admitted he has been targeting this event as he begins to focus on more Olympic glory in 2012.

"This year we are really keen to gain as many Olympic qualification points as we can as early as we can - they are really important," he said.

"If you don't get the points you don't get to ride at the Olympics, it's as simple as that.

"The strategy now is to get as many in the bag as possible so that next season and heading into London we don't have to worry about travelling on long-haul flights across the globe, which can be quite exhausting, but also break up your training routine.

"Ideally we want to get it done as early as possible so we can pick and choose the races we want to do in 2011 and 2012.

"We've got until straight after the World Championships in 2012 to get the points we need, but we hope to have enough by the end of next season or the start of 2012."

Meanwhile fellow Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton took silver in the sprints as she finished second to Australia's Anna Meares.

Kristina Vogel of Germany finished third.

Pendleton also took silver, with Jess Varnish, for Great Britain in the team event while Ed Clancy took bronze for Britain in the men's omnium.
