Australia's Jay Vine overcome a draining final climb to a claim a second stage victory in three days on stage eight of the Vuelta a España at Colláu Fancuaya.

It was not long ago that the Alpecin-Deceuninck cyclist was celebrating his first Grand Tour stage win, but the 26-year-old added another to his catalogue after 154.5 kilometres from La Pola Llaviana.

Vine initially made his dash from a group including Groupama-FDJ's Thibaut Pinot of France and Bahrain Victorious' Mikel Landawith of Belgium with 6km left.

The Australian never looked back as he recorded a time of 4 hours 05min 26sec to finish 43 seconds clear of Spain's stage five winner Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates and Estonia's Rein Taaramae of Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux.

"It's incredible," Vine said.

"I've just got so much more confidence after that first, it's like I've got that monkey off my back.

"It just felt so much more natural riding in the group today.

"All the pressure was off me."

Belgium's Remco Evenepoel maintained his lead at the top of the overall standings after coming fifth.

The Quick-Step-Alpha Vinyl Team rider is 28 seconds in front of Spain's Enric Mas of Movistar Team.

Slovenia's defending champion Primož Roglič, representing Jumbo-Visma, sits third having to make up 1min 1sec in the overall event to move back into the lead.

The Vuelta a España is due to continue tomorrow with riders heading on a 175.5km mountainous route stretching from Villaviciosa to Les Praeres.
