Hosts of the Women's West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championship, Jordan, got off to a winning start in a bid to defend their title, beating Syria 4-0 at the Petra Stadium in Amman.

Maysa Jbarah scored a hat-trick to help her side to a strong result.

Her first came after just 11 minutes, slotting home after an initial scramble in the box following a corner.

Jbarah's second came after an hour, heading home from a long free-kick taken by her team-mate Rand Abu-Hussein.

Substitute Bana Al Bitar got a third five minutes later from a cross across the box, flicking it into the bottom corner.

Jbarah completed the hat-trick in the 89th minute with another header - this time getting on the end of a inwards whipping cross from Tasnim Isleem.

In the opening match of the day, Lebanon also won convincingly, beating Palestine 3-0.

Sophie Fayyad got the opener after just nine minutes by scoring from 25 yards as the goalkeeper Leen Qaraqra failed to keep it out.

A second goal would not come until the 74th minute when a Layla Iskandar corner met Christy Maalouf.

Iskandar added the third in the 95th minute, after several minutes of poor discipline from the Palestinian team, who took issue with one of their players going down with injury and questioned the refereeing.
