Initiatives were rolled out in Ñuñoa, La Pintana, Los Andes, San Pedro de la Paz, Valparaíso and Pichilemu.

The programme trained teachers to coach sports to children while also giving the students the chance to try new activities.

"The objective of this initial phase is to improve the implementation of this strategy so that by 2023 teachers will have no problems in achieving the final objective of this," read a Santiago 2023 statement.

"Within the different implementations, the students had various activities with sport as the main pedagogical tool, as well as theoretical classes and inductive to the Games."

Sessions were held in modern pentathlon, rugby sevens, gymnastics, and 3x3 basketball.

Although sport was the key vehicle, skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership were also demonstrated.

"We think it's wonderful that they can come and visit us and be part of this mega sporting event," said Mariela San Martín, a teacher at the Miguel José Zañartu School in San Pedro de la Paz.

"In addition, teachers can also learn and help our students.

"Sport is fundamental for girls and boys, as it helps them in aspects such as emotional, social and physical development."

Chile is set to host the Pan American Games for the first time from October 20 to November 5 next year, followed by the Parapan American Games from November 17 to 26.

More than 6,900 athletes are expected to compete in the Pan American Games and more than 1,900 in the Parapan American Games, with both events featuring 41 participating countries.
