This marked a return to Panevėžys for Olympic Day after a five-year hiatus, with biathlete Vytautas Strolia, sprint canoeist Mindaugas Maldonis and middle-distance runner Eglė Balčiūnaitė among the athletes who tried different sports to their usual disciplines.

More than 30 Olympic athletes participated in the Panevėžys celebrations, including Rio 2016 canoe sprint Olympic bronze medallist Edvinas Ramanauskas.

An Olympic Day Flame was lit by Panevėžys Mayor Rytis Račkauskas and NOC of Lithuania (LNOC) President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė, after a Torch Relay started by basketball player Gabrielius Maldūnas and Lithuanian international footballer Linas Klimavičius.

Participants competed in 200 metres, 400m and 600m swimming, 3x3 basketball, the Lithuanian Olympic mile and children's 500m, five kilometres and 10km running among the activities.

More than 10,000 prizes were given away to active participants.

Gudzinevičiūtė was pleased with how the day panned out.

"It’s great to be back in Panevėžys, which welcomed us in the renewed Senvagė," the International Olympic Committee member and Sydney 2000 women's trap shooting Olympic gold medallist said.

"This is a special occasion for the Olympic Movement, celebrated in different ways all over the world.

"I’m glad that 10 years ago we decided to travel through Lithuanian cities with the Olympic Day and to create a great celebration together."

Račkauskas was thrilled to welcome Olympic Day celebrations to the city.

"The event was a great success and I hope that we have raised the Olympic Day bar even higher after this day," he commented.

"I’m delighted with the large number of participants - it’s great that so many people decided to spend this weekend in Panevėžys.

"I would like to thank the organisers and participants for a great celebration, and I wish Panevėžys to light the Olympic Day Torch in our city for the third time shortly."

The city of Šiauliai is due to host next year's LNOC Olympic Day.
