Canada claimed four golds as they topped the medal standings at a sparsley-fielded American Boxing Confederation American Elite Boxing Championships in Cali that was without several leading nations.

The Canadian team had a boxer in nine of the 13 finals in the Colombian city, winning four of those at an event that notably featured no fighters from the United States following USA Boxing’s withdrawal from the International Boxing Association (IBA) which has been banished from the Olympic Movement.

There were also no representation from several other leading countries, including Cuba and Brazil, with the latter confirming in June that it had also cut ties with the IBA.

Several categories featured just a few boxers, with only three in both the men's heavyweight and women's middleweight divisions and four in the women's bantamweight class in a tournament that offered qualifying places for this year's Pan American Games in Santiago.

Tammara Thibeault, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and 2022 world gold medallist, was among those to pick up titles for Canada.

The 26-year-old overcame Ingrit Milady Maldonado Delgado of Ecuador to win women’s middleweight gold.

Scarlett Delgado also defeated an Ecuadorian opponent in Helen Michelle Sanchez Palacios to seal the women’s bantamweight title.

Marcel Jerome Mouafo Feujio delivered another gold for Canada when he beat Javier Alejandro Cruz Hernandez of Mexico in the men’s super heavyweight final.

Keven Emmanuel Beausejour was the other Canadian gold medallist as he beat Guyana’s Desmond Cort Amsterdam in the men’s light heavyweight final.

Venezuela also had a successful tournament, capturing a hat-trick of gold medals including one for Jesus Nazareth Cova Romero.

Canada’s Wyatt Sanford came unstuck in the final as the Venezuelan claimed the men’s light welterweight title.

Venezuela’s other gold medals came courtesy of Keymberth Jose Gonzalez Solorzano’s victory in the men’s flyweight category and Omailyn Alcalá’s success in the women’s featherweight division.

Mexico claimed two golds as Ingrid Alexa Gómez Galicia and Rogelio Romero clinched the respective women’s light flyweight and men’s heavyweight titles.

There was also double delight for Puerot Rico as Angel Gabriel Llanos Perez secured men’s light middleweight gold and Caleb Josue Tirado Pagan was crowned men’s featherweight champion.
