Darja Varfolomeev of Germany claimed the hoop and ball titles at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Valencia.

Her performance on Wednesday means she is now a three-time world champion, having clinched gold in clubs at the previous edition in Sofia.

Varfolomeev scored 35.750 in the hoop final to pip silver medallist Sofia Raffaeli of Italy and bronze winner Fanni Pigniczki of Hungary.

Raffaeli managed 35.250 while Pigniczki scored 34.050.

"The audience supported me a lot," Varfolomeev said.

"They were really enthusiastic, and so I was quite enthusiastic in return in my performances.

"I’m so glad it all worked out this way finally!

Pigniczki scripted history by winning a first world medal for Hungary after the bronze medal from Maria Patocska in 1973.

Varfolomeev scored 35.800 for the ball final.

Raffaeli once again settled for silver with 35.200 while bronze went to Stiliana Nikolova of Bulgaria on 35.150.

Despite losing out on a small margin, Raffaeli seemed confident for the next events.

"It’s the first day and these are the first medals," the 19-year-old said.

"I hope tomorrow I do the same work as I did today."

European all-around champion Boryana Kaleyn of Bulgaria finished fourth in both categories.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the clubs and ribbon finals.
