The International Boxing Association (IBA) has celebrated its International Boxing Day with the latest edition of Champions' Night in Serpukhov.

The Russian city saw home favourite Muslim Gadzhimagomedov celebrate a victory over Cuba's Julio La Cruz in one of the nine five-round fixtures.

The IBA's Board of Directors were among the "many esteemed guests" in attendance.

In the main event, a men's heavyweight bout, double Olympic gold medallist La Cruz and two-time world champion Gadzhimagomedov went the distance in a tight fixture.

The latter took the win by a slender advantage in the judges' eyes which brought the crowd to its feet.

"IBA Champions' Night is a top tournament, with good prize money, the best boxers face each other as we did tonight with Julio La Cruz, who is defending Olympic champion, and I am defending world champion," Gadzhimagomedov said after the bout which was a rematch of the pair's Tokyo 2020 gold medal-match.

"It was tough, as we are extremely competitive rivals.

"Our plan paid off; we found the key to success.

"I haven't had any issues with other opponents during the last five years, and lost just two times, both to La Cruz.

"He is my main rival, an outstanding boxer, and now I have finally found my way through."

The other big battle of the night saw Russian world champion Mark Petrovskii face off against Ecuadorian world silver medal-winning heavyweight Julio Castillo.

The bout was even until the final round when Petrovskii unleashed an offensive flurry to claim a unanimous points victory.

The theme of this year's International Boxing Day is "Beyond the Ring" and aims to bring people together using the power of sport.

IBA has also labelled 2023 as the "Year of Asia" to celebrate the continent and boxing's development in its countries.

International Boxing Day saw a multitude of events take place across the world to celebrate.

In Somalia, a boxing tournament was launched on the seaside by the National Federation while similar events to promote the sport also took place in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sri Lanka, Macao, Pakistan, Cuba, Bhutan, and Tajikistan.
