Canada pulled off a stunning 100-89 victory over Slovenia to reach the semi-finals of the International Basketball Federation World Cup for the first time in Manila.

It was an extraordinary match as both teams scored 50 points after 20 minutes to thrill the packed-out crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Filipino capital.

Canada added a further 50 in the second half, including an impressive third period to overcome Slovenia.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander top scored with 31 points and registered 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

RJ Barrett was another star performer for Canada, notching 24 points with 13 of those coming in the third period.

"Congrats to these guys, they just made history," said Canada head coach Jordi Fernandez, whose side will now prepare to face Serbia in the last four.

"This is the best position so far for Canada, congrats to the guys, to the country and to Canada Basketball.

"Tonight was a fight and these guys executed at a high level.

"It was extremely important to finish possessions because that's when our fast break starts.

"We pushed the pace for 40 minutes and it went our way."

Germany also triumphed today, sealing their place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2002 after overcoming Latvia 81-79 in Manila.

The crucial moment came at the start of the fourth period when Germany scored eight points without reply to move 70-59 in front.

Latvia rallied to get within two points with 30 seconds left but Germany managed to see out time.

Franz Wagner top scored with 16 points, while Andreas Obst and Moritz Wagner notched 13 and 12 points respectively as Germany secured a showdown with the United States.

"It feels great," said Germany’s Johannes Thiemann.

"I don't think it was a perfect game, but I'm just happy that I was there to get the push off the bench, to help the team there.

"This is super important, especially for basketball in Germany that we have a successful national team.

"We're doing our best to provide that."

Both semi-finals are due to be held at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday (September 8).
