Kaunas in Lithuania has been awarded the rights to host the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championships Modern Pentathlon next year.

The second edition of the event will feature obstacle laser run, further helping the International Federation as it aims to gradually replace the riding element of modern pentathlon with obstacle.

"Modern Pentathlon has always been strongly aligned to education, with a large proportion of pentathletes training and competing during university courses and going on to have successful professional careers both inside and outside of the movement," International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) President Klaus Schormann said.

"I am delighted that the FISU World University Championships Modern Pentathlon will return in 2024 for its second instalment, enabling student athletes from around the world to gather in a highly competitive and social environment where they can test the exciting new format Obstacle Laser Run.

"The development of UIPM’s worldwide partnership with universities is facilitated by the integration of Obstacle, making our sport more accessible globally.

"Lithuania is a very active nation within our movement and I have no doubt the 2024 competition in Kaunas will be arranged at the same high level as the UIPM 2023 Junior World Championships in Druskininkai, with the UIPM 2024 U19 World Championships also heading to Lithuania."

The first edition of the event was held in Budapest in 2018.

The plan was to conduct it every four years before the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in schedule.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Ahmed Elgendy of Egypt and two-time world champion Elena Micheli of Italy were among the athletes who finished on the podium in 2018.

FISU sports director Juan Carlos Holgado expressed his delight in the awarding of the tournament.

He said FISU is "proud to support the UIPM in its efforts to move Modern Pentathlon to the next level".
