Individual and team records were set as South Africa started their International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign with a big win against Sri Lanka.

After being put in to bat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium at Delhi in India, South Africa amassed the highest ever team total at a World Cup as they scored 428 for five off 50 overs, beating the previous record held by Australia by 11 runs.

Three Proteas batsman made centuries with Aiden Markram setting a record for the fastest Cricket World Cup century, which he scored off 49 balls.

Markram was dismissed for 106, while Quinton de Kock made 100 and Rassie van der Dussen scored 108.

It would take a monumental effort for Sri Lanka to complete a successful run chase, and they fell 102 runs short, after being bowled out for 326.

Kusal Mendis top scored with 76 off 42 balls, including eight sixes, while captain Dasun Shanaka made 68 off 62, as Sri Lanka’s campaign got off to a bad start.

In the day’s other match Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by six wickets at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

After choosing to field, Bangladesh’s spinners made the most of helpful conditions as they took combined figures of six wickets for 55 runs off 17 overs, as Afghanistan were bowled out for 156.

Wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz top scored with 47 opening the batting, but the wickets tumbled in the second half of the innings as Afghanistan lost eight for 44 runs.

Three wickets each went to Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and fellow spinner Mehidy Hasan.

Despite losing two wickets in the powerplay, Bangladesh cruised home with 15 overs to spare thanks to a 97-run partnership between Mehidy Hasan, who made 57, and Hossain Shanto, who finished unbeaten with 59.

Action continues tomorrow with hosts India playing their opening fixture of the tournament, as they face Australia in Chennai.
