Fedorovich's coaching career began when he enrolled in the Russian State University of Physical Education following a stint in the army.

There he was taken under the wing of Yevgeny Mikhailovich Chumakov who he learned his coaching methods from.

At the age of 26, he began to train a group of athletes and at the next Moscow Championships all of his students secured gold medals.

"Yuri Fedorovich made an undeniable contribution to the development of our sport," read a statement from the governing body.

"On behalf of the All-Russian Sambo Federation, we would like to once again honour his memory and express our condolences to his family and friends."

In 1981, he became head coach of Russia's youth sambo team.

It was in this role where he identified the talents of Sergey Vladimirovich Eliseev who would later coach the country's national junior side and serve as President of the All-Russian Sambo Federation.

In the 1990s, he lead Russia's women's national team before eventually making way for Anastasia Vitalievna Kondratieva in 2018.

"In the piggy bank of achievements of Yuri Fedorovich not only many years and excellent results as a coach of the national team, but also many personal records," continued the statement.

"At the age of 42, he ran a 100-kilometer marathon - 10 hours 57 minutes.

"He climbed Mount Elbrus.

"He was engaged in mountaineering and rock climbing.

"He mastered snowboarding and alpine skiing.

"Yuri Fyodorovich became a legend during his lifetime.

"We will always remember you!"

Federovich's funeral took place on Wednesday (October 11) in Moscow.
