South Korea's Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Chung Woo-taik has called for the appointment of an Organising Committee President for the Chungcheong 2027 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games.

It is set to be the third South Korean hosting of the Games after Daegu 2003 and Gwangju 2015.

Chung has a special interest in the event as he served as Governor of North Chungcheong from July 2006 until June 2010.

"For the success of the 2027 Summer University Games, thorough preparation and efforts by local Governments together with the central Government are very important," he said, as reported by Straight News.

"As the four cities and provinces will jointly host the Games, it is necessary to actively engage in win-win growth and cooperation through securing budgets and sufficient communication to prepare for the Games smoothly.

"Since it is difficult to make efficient and quick decisions with the current system of co-chairmen of the four city and provincial governors, it is necessary to establish a one-person Organising Committee chairperson system with expertise through sufficient communication."

"Only thorough preparation and efforts can we achieve the fruits of win-win and economic effects in Chungcheong Province.

"Otherwise, it will only leave a great wound on the disappointment of the people and the pride of the people of Chungcheong Province."

An Organising Committee for the Games was only established in July despite it being awarded to Chungcheong in November 2022.

This caused distress from political leaders in the province who issued a joint statement expressing their concerns.

The Committee was then formed but it does not have a President and is instead governed equally by its members.

"The bid for the Summer University Games in November last year created an opportunity for the hopes and aspirations of the Chungcheong region to unite the Republic of Korea," Chung said.

"We hope that through the success of the U Games, the four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region will become the cornerstone of the Chungcheong megacity and win-win development."
