Maggie MacNeil won her fifth gold medal of the Pan American Games and Brazil's Guilherme Costa added a fourth on the final day of swimming at Santiago 2023.

Canada's MacNeil, the Olympic 100 metres butterfly champion, was part of the Canadian quartet which claimed the women's 4x100m medley relay title.

They clocked 3min 58.76sec with MacNeil's golden haul a record for a Canadian at a single Pan American Games.

The 23-year-old Chinese-born swimmer had already won the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 4x100m freestyle relay titles, as well as the 50m freestyle after a dead heat with American Gabi Albiero.

MacNeil won seven medals in all at the Aquatic Center Laguna Los Morros, a record matched by her team-mate Mary-Sophie Harvey who won three golds, two silvers and two bronze.

Brazil's Guilherme Costa, nicknamed "Cachorrão", which translates as "Big Dog", also rounded off his Games in style with his fourth gold medal.

He won the men's 1500m freestyle in 15:09.29 to add to his individual titles over 400m and 800m, and the 4x200m freestyle crown.

"I left from the beginning wanting to control the race, the more it was under my control, the easier it would be," said Costa.

"It turned out that I found it a little more relaxed than the 400 and 800, that I was able to swim at my pace there, in the last 500 the pace went up well."

Both Sydney Pickrem of Canada and Rachel Stege of the United States both won their second golds of the Games on the final day.

Pickrem backed up her women's 200m breaststroke success by winning the 200m individual medley final in a Games record 2:09.04.

Stege won the women's 1500m freestyle in 16:13.59, also a Games record, to add to her title from the 4x200m freestyle relay.

A good session for Canada also featured victory for Finlay Knox in the men's 200m individual medley.

He touched home in 1:57.84 to give his time in Chile's capital a golden lining after he previously won four bronze medals.

The final race of the Games, the men's 4x100m medley relay final, was won by the US in 3:33.29.
