The French Government is set to undertake a study on the feasibility of enlisting army reserves to help with security at next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

The country's Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra revealed that the option will be studied as a solution to compensate for a lack of manpower in private security during the Games.

Research is set to start at the beginning of next year.

"As the question of the use of the army does not arise at the moment, I have said that we are, at least until the beginning of 2024, in a process consisting of prioritising all the efforts we have to make in the field of private security," Oudéa-Castéra said during a Senate hearing on the 2024 budget.

Figures in the Government and the military had been calling for a decision to be made in the autumn, or at least by the end of December.

The Court of Auditors also insisted on the need to take a decision this month.

Oudéa-Castéra warned the process would take longer.

"We need to continue our efforts to train even more people in these private security professions," Oudéa-Castéra said.

"We need to further accelerate the matching between the Paris 2024 Organising Committee contracts awarded to a certain number of private security companies and the people we train and recruit."

Paris 2024 has previously stated that it needs between 17,000 and 22,000 people to undertake the security requirements of the event.

Several large private security companies have declined the chance to provide their services for the Games.

A fourth call for tenders is set to be launched in the coming months, but calling up the reserves of the police and gendarmerie is also being considered.

A similar scramble for security was also soon at London 2012 after the British Government had to mobilise approximately 4,700 months before the Olympic Games due to security company G4S being unable to provide sufficient personnel.

Paris 2024 is due to begin with the Olympic Games on July 26, which runs to August 11, before the Paralympics are scheduled to be staged from August 28 to September 8.
