Uganda Olympic Committee celebrates its 8th graduation ceremony. UOC

The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) recently held its 8th graduation ceremony, awarding certificates and advanced diplomas in sports management to 130 students. The ceremony took place in Lugogo, an area in the city of Kampala, Uganda.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Donald Rukare, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, urged sports administrators in schools, clubs, associations and federations to actively participate in the courses offered by the UOC. He stressed the critical role of capacity building in the development of sport.

"It is through skills and knowledge that sport in Uganda will be managed professionally," Rukare said in Lugogo.

Uganda is making strides in international scene sport. At Tokyo 2020, the country achieved its best ever result. For the first time, they won two gold medals (four in their history) and a total of four medals (11 in history) in just one date of Olympic Games.

Beatrice Ayikoru, Secretary General of the UOC, addressed the women who had completed the courses: "As the UOC, we want to see more women involved in sport, and without training them, this will never be possible. We have seen women as athletes and in other areas of administration. That is why we are encouraging them to get involved in sports administration."

The programme's director, George Wagogo, commented: "The dearth of quality sports administrators in Uganda is fast becoming history after UOC's efforts to train several beneficiaries every year."

The graduates gained expertise in various areas including governance, strategic planning, marketing, financial management, human resource management, and event organisation.
