Golfer Scottie Scheffler's court date has been postponed to 3 June following his arrest during the US PGA Championship at Valhalla last week.

The 27-year-old was arrested on Friday, 17 May, after attempting to drive into Valhalla Golf Club amidst heavy traffic. His arraignment was initially scheduled for Tuesday, 21 May. Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. He denies all charges, which still remain on the docket.

Play at the event was delayed by 80 minutes on Friday due to an accident near the course, where a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a shuttle bus. The accident caused significant traffic congestion, leading some individuals to abandon their cars on the motorway. Scheffler, who was not involved in the accident, reportedly tried to bypass the scene before being stopped by police.

The American was released in time for his second round at the PGA Championship, with the world number one describing the incident as a "significant misunderstanding". "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said.

"It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do." Scheffler's attorney, Steve Romines, stated, "Several eyewitnesses verified that he did not commit any wrongdoing but was merely following instructions."

Footage of the scene outside the Louisville, Kentucky course depicted Scheffler handcuffed and escorted into the back of a police vehicle. Subsequently, law enforcement released a report detailing the incident, indicating that the officer who endeavoured to deter Scheffler from driving onto the course was pulled to the ground, sustaining "pain, swelling, and abrasions" to his left wrist and knee.

Scheffler was originally scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, just two days after securing a top-ten finish at the PGA. However, a judge rescheduled the court date to 3 June, as confirmed in a statement released Monday by Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell.

“Today, over the objection of Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, the District Judge presiding in the case of Mr Scheffler granted the defendant’s attorney’s motion to continue Mr Scheffler’s arraignment from 21 May to 3 June at 9am," the statement said. "Our office continues to gather information in the case.”

He was released from custody and managed to arrive at the course in time for the second round, where he posted a score of 66. However, his chances for success in the tournament dwindled after shooting a 73 on Saturday, his first over-par round since last August. He concluded the event with a strong performance, carding a 65 and finishing tied for eighth place.
