The 71-year-old Kamuti, who finished second in the foil at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, will fulfil the rest of Usmanov's 18-month term after the billionaire Russian was elected as the new International Fencing Federation (FIE) last month.

 

Under CEE's rules, the first vice-president takes over the duties of the outgoing president.

 

Kamuti, a surgeon in Budapest, has been first vice-president since 2005.

 

It is his second time in the president's position having previously held the post from 1996 to 2005, when he was replaced by Usmanov, who also is the biggest share holder of English Premiership club Arsenal.

 

He holds several other key positions in sport, including being the secretary general of the Hungarian Olympc Committee, a role he has held since 2005, and he is a former member of the International Olympic Committee's Medical Commission.
