altApril 5 - Jose Maria Odriozola (pictured), the president of the Spanish Athletics Federation, has been appointed as a Technical Delegate for athletics events at the London 2012 Olympic Games, it has been announced.

 

The appointment was made by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

 

Odriozola is also a delegate at the World Championships to be held in the German capital from August 15-23.

 

The 69-year-old is a professor of biochemistry at the the University of Madrid and has represented Spain at athletics and rugby.

Over the years, Odriozola has acquired immense experience serving as a technical delegate at the 2000 World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile, 2003 World Championships in Paris among others.

 

He has also served as president or vice-president of the local organising committees of 16 World, European and Cup Championships, including the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1999 World Championships in Seville. 
 

A technical delegate is required to have vast experience and knowledge of athletics; his main functions are to collaborate with the local organisers for scheduling of the competition.

A technical delegate supervises all the technical part of the competition, which among other things includes facilities, training area, materials, coordination with the local judges and the other nominated delegates.
