September 14 - South Africa's Government today filed a complaint with the United Nations Division for The Advancement of Women over the treatment of Caster Semenya (pictured), the women's world 800 metres champion whose gender is under investigation.

The complaint was made by Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, South Africa’s Minister for Women, Children and People With Disabilities, who has to written division's director, Carolyn Hannan, asking her to investigate the matter, claiming "there has been blatant disregard for Miss Semenya's human dignity".

She said the questioning of Semenya's sex by the world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), "is based on a stereotypic [sic] view of the physical features and abilities attributable to women.

"Such stereotypes demonstrate the extent of patriarchy within the world's sporting community."

Mayende-Sibiya's complaint follows that of Parliament's Sport Committee chairman, Butana Komphela, to the UN's Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights.

Komphela last month accused the IAAF of racism and sexism.

In her letter, Mayende-Sibiya asked that the IAAF "investigate this matter as it has severe consequences for women's participation in sports globally".

She asked for "some degree of transparency from the IAAF" about the "unjustified public scrutiny" to which Semenya's sex status had been subjected.

Mayende-Sibiya said Semenya's treatment was in violation of the Beijing Platform for Action, which calls for support for women in sport from a young age, and the Brighton Declaration of 1994, which calls for a sporting culture that allows women's participation in competitive events.
