Ukrainian swimmer Oleksii Kolomiiets was among the first gold medallists at the Deaflympics in the Brazilian city of Caxias do Sul.

Kolomiiets earned three relay medals and a men's 50 metres breaststroke silver at the 2017 edition of the Deaflympics in Samsun, and today clinched the men's 50m butterfly title at the Recreio Da Juventude.

He clocked 26.42sec, with Argentinian silver medallist Llanos Emanuel finishing in 26.24 and Japan's Ryutaro Ibara coming through in third in 25.55.

It was a successful day for the Ukrainians in the pool amid the Russian invasion of their country, as they also claimed two silver medals and a bronze in the individual events.

Ivan Zinenko placed second in the men's 400m freestyle with a time of 4min 19.31sec, being pipped to gold by Italy's Luca Germano in 4:20.03.

Japan's Satoi Fujihara rounded off the podium in 4:15.98.

In the women's 100m backstroke, Valeriia Vernyba of Ukraine clocked 1:14.08 to secure silver, with gold going to Germany's Paula Pichier in 1:15.15 and bronze to Japan's Ikuha Nakahigashi in 1:14.08.

Anita Makhnyk was the other Ukrainian medallist on the first day of swimming competition, finishing third in 2:30.91 in the women's 200m medley.

American Brooke Thompson triumphed in 2:35.88, with Poland's Julia Chmielewska earning silver in 2:33.50.

In the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, Portugal came out on top with a time of 4:01.01, followed by Italy in 3:56.39 and Japan in 3:54.66.

The mixed 4x100m freestyle gold went to Spain in 4:40.00, with Japan claiming silver in 4:00.00 and Poland bronze in 3:52.80.

The men's football competition continued with Brazil falling to a 4-1 defeat against Italy, although the host nation had a better day in the women's handball tournament as they beat Argentina 36-4.

Turkey saw off Kenya 43-16 in the other match in the women's handball competition.

The delayed Deaflympics is due to run until May 15.
