France's Mejdi Schalck and the United States' Brooke Raboutou earned victories at the season-opening International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup of the season in the boulder discipline in Hachioji.

Last year's overall bronze medallist in boulder Raboutou was dominant in the final, after ranking second in her group in qualification with five tops and five zones behind Olympic silver medallist Miho Nonaka of Japan.

She ranked third in the semi-final with two tops and four zones, and produced three tops and four zones in the final at the Esforta Arena Hachioji.

Germany's Hannah Meul was the only other athlete to reach a top in the final along with three zones, helping her to finish second.

Japanese home favourite Anon Matsufuji was third with three zones, beating Israel's Ayala Kerem and China's Zhilu Luo by virtue of having fewer attempts.

The result earned Raboutou her first World Cup gold medal in the boulder discipline.

Back-to-back boulder World Cup overall winner Natalia Grossman of the US failed to progress past the semi-finals, while Slovenia's Olympic champion Janja Garnbret missed the season opener because of injury.

Schalck earned his second World Cup gold on the men's side as the only climber to reach two tops in the final.

Hannes Van Duysen took Belgium's first IFSC World Cup medal with one top and three zones to finish second, a result matched by Paul Jenft of France who finished third with more attempts.

South Korea's capital Seoul is set to host the next IFSC World Cup in the boulder and speed disciplines from Friday (April 28) to Sunday (April 30).
