Marjolaine Pierre and Clement Mignon celebrated with a kiss on the finish line after giving France double long distance gold on the final day of the World Triathlon Multisport World Championships in Ibiza.

Mignon recovered from a crash to win the men’s race in 5hrs 17mins 17secs from Antonio Benito Lopez of Spain in 5:17:49 for silver, with South Africa’s Matt Trautman claiming bronze in 5:19:52.

Mignon had been in the chasing pack after the swim, but on the bike ride he joined Germany’s Rico Bogen as he raced towards the transition at the head of the field.

As they approached the station, Mignon caught his pedal at the dismount and was thrown to the floor.

It seemed as though Benito Lopez had seized the advantage but on the final lap of the thirty kilometre run, Mignon surged past and eventually won by 30 seconds.

"I did that crash at T2 so the start of the run was very hard for me," Mignon told the Tri 247 website.

"Antonio had passed me early on and there was a big gap between us, so I was super happy to catch him at the end in the last kilometre, a crazy day!"

Pierre won the women’s race by a margin of almost ten minutes in 5:53:35 on her long distance debut.

Sara Svensk of Sweden took silver in 6:02:10, while bronze went to Gurutze Frades Larralde of Spain in 6:06:48 after producing the fastest run of the day.

Pierre had been one of the leading group as they came out of the water and after 30km of the 116km distance on the bike, she had already established a two-minute advantage over pre-race favourite Kat Matthews of Britain, later forced to retire.

By the final transition, Pierre had a lead of seven minutes and cruised home on the run.

"It was my first time in this distance after a terrible year last year with four stress fractures, so this year I made a lot of changes," Pierre revealed.

"I’ve never led a race as early as that so it was hard to know if I pushed too much, and then as it grew I became a bit worried if I was doing the right thing, this will take a long time to sink in."

Next year’s World Triathlon Multisport World Championships are set to begin in Townsville, Queensland on August 15 2024.
