Britian's Delicious Orie clinched the men's super-heavyweight title at the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games here for the final gold medal in boxing.

Commonwealth Games champion Orie and his final opponent Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan both had to come through semi-finals against Yordan Hernández of Bulgaria and Nelvie Tiafack of Germany respectively on Friday (June 30) to clinch qualifying places at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with only two quotas available in the men's over-92 kilograms category.

Orie added the gold medal to cap off the Games, and was later selected as Britain's flagbearer for the Closing Ceremony at the Henryk Reyman Stadium.

He won the gold-medal match on a unanimous points decision at the Nowy Targ Arena.

Orie described his emotions after a highly successful visit to Poland.

"For me, this is my thank you - winning gold medals for my country," he said.

"To be able to hold this flag above my head and show the great British public that I adore them.

"I just want to say thank you everyone so much for your support - you’re the reason I’m here doing my thing."

Ireland's two-time European champion Aoife O'Rourke also had to come through a high-stakes women's under-75kg semi-final against Elżbieta Wójcik of Poland on Friday (July 1) which had an Olympic quota place on the line, and she followed her scrappy win with an impressive unanimous points decision victory against Davina Michel of France for gold.

The other four weight categories in which finals were held on the last day of the European Games featured quota places for all medallists.

Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu of Turkey won the first final of the day on a unanimous decision against France's Wassila Lkhadiri in the women's under-50kg, and France's Amina Zidani beat Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria 4-1 in the women's under-57kg.

Javier Ibáñez dominated against Spain's José Quiles for men's under-57kg gold, and Denmark earned a men's under-71kg triumph through Nikolai Terteryan who beat Serbia's European champion Vahid Abasov.

Boxing at the European Games was granted Olympic qualifying status by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after it took over the procedure for the second consecutive Games due to governance concerns at the now-expelled International Boxing Association (IBA).

A breakaway World Boxing has been formed seeking IOC recognition, and one of its leading figures in former IBA Presidential candidate Boris van der Vorst of The Netherlands was among the officials in attendance at Kraków-Małopolska 2023.
